In this class, students will be introduced to some of the scientific principles of flight by folding paper airplanes, making wings and fuselages, and testing the planes they make. Each class will start with a demonstration, and lead into the student examining principles in hands-on activities. Instructor Background: Dr. Simon Woodruff is a physicist with his own company 'Woodruff Scientific, Inc' that over the last 12 years has worked the Department of Energy, National Labs, universities and the private sector, also offering training in computing. Dr. Woodruff ran a Saturday morning pre-K, and K technology club for his son and friends and parents. Activity Size: 5-25 participants Participant Fee: 49 dollars (cost already includes $5.00 supply fee) Location: Rm. xxx Class 1: Principle: weight. Activity: Folding paper planes. We'll use the 'World Champion Paper Airplane' book, and try out a few examples, folding paper planes, no cutting required. We'll hold a competition for the furthest flight. We'll look at how to balance a plane, get the weight right, and show what happens if the nose or tail is too heavy. Class 2: Principle: drag. Activity: Paper planes, wings and fuselages, cut-outs required. We'll use templates provided for making paper airplanes that need some cutting, and stapling or use of tape in their construction. All planes will be test-flown in class. We'll look at what makes an airplane go superfast, and what makes it go superslow. Class 3: Principle: lift. Activity: Foam-board planes We'll use push-out construction planes made with foamboard. Some tape and some glue will be used. We'll look at how to make a wing Class 4: Principle: thrust. Activity: balsa planes with propellers, balloon rockets, elastic band launchers Class 5: Principle: control. Activity: helium balloons with controllers Class 6: Principle: using wind! Activity: kite making, flying them if the weather permits. Class 7: Principle: control. Ailerons, rudders and elevators! ==After-School Enrichment Program Quarter 4== Week Days Dates 1 Mon -Thur 4.02 – 4.05 Class 1 2 Mon -Thur 4.09 – 4.12 Class 2 3 Mon -Thur 4.16 – 4.19 Class 3 4 Mon -Thur 4.23– 4.26 Class 4 5 Mon -Thur 4.30– 5.03 Class 5 6 Mon -Thur 5.07 – 5.10 Class 6 7 Mon - Thur 5.14 – 5.17 Class 7
